Garden Island Coffee is a surf coffee wagon in Kauai owned by Matt Rydell. Matt followed his passion and traveled all around the world learning about the complex techniques of coffee-roasting. From there, he opened a roasting business in San Diego, and then moved back to Hawaii to start his coffee wagon business with the idea of grabbing a cup of joe before surfing. Garden Island Coffee asked Ellemsee Media to create a brand identity around this concept.
We designed Garden Island’s logo with the idea of coffee and surf intertwined. Garden Island Coffee’s custom logo is an illustrated coffee bean. If you look closely, there’s a line going down the middle in the shape of a surfboard. The team also created a fun graphic of a “shaka” used to complement their branding in a fun way.
Garden Island Coffee has a few fun graphics they use throughout their collateral. The primary is the identity by itself and the secondary is the identity layered on top of the shape of Kauai. We also designed coffee cups and shirts with a tertiary shaka wave logo.
Garden Island Coffee’s brand is successful because it maintains the laidback and welcoming style of the company, while still being recognizable. It’s always fun to work with different styles when approaching branding projects and this one was no exception.
